10 THINGS – Nathaniel Potvin
When did you decide to become an actor and how did you get your start?
I decided to become an actor when I was 11. It was a very easy process for me because when I was a dancer, they started offering acting classes at my dance studio. So, I started participating in the classes and found my future manager. She was responsible for a lot of the early connections that got me working. My first job was actually a Back-to-School Target commercial, where I was dancing with some of my friends from the studio. My career just blossomed from there into more acting roles.
Are there any actors that you look up to and have made a positive impact on your career thus far?
There are so many actors I really look up to. People like Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry and Denzel Washington. They are all strong, African American Actors that have shown me even though you can be on television and in movies, you can still make time for working on the stage. That they aren’t caught up or consumed by fame and they love acting.
Currently, you’re on the popular Netflix series, Alexa & Katie. How were you first introduced to the show and what made you excited to be a part of it?
I was first introduced to the show by my agents wondering if I would want to audition. After reading the synopsis, I figured that the show was actually a wonderful approach to tackling the hard subject of cancer and introducing that to kids. The message behind the show was a really big reason why I auditioned and eventually was happy to take the job.
On the show you play the role of Ryan. What can you tell us about Ryan’s personality?
Ryan is a theater kid but his personality is really centered around liking Katie. He is this character that is constantly trying to please her and make her like him. Ryan is funny but not in a flirty way, more in the way that he will trip on accident. He really is loyal, and has liked the same girl for two seasons of the show. He is always willing to help someone, and just has a good heart.
What do you enjoy most about playing Ryan on screen?
The thing I most enjoy about playing Ryan is that since he is such a goof-ball, it allows me as an actor to “play,” and have a lot of fun on set. One of my favorite things to do, is figure out what could make each moment more fun between myself and my scene partner, or how I can make my scene partner break.
For those who have not tuned into the series just yet, what can you share about the show and your role in it?
The show is about two girls and one of them has cancer. The other girl who is her best friend shaves her head in sympathy and they have to tackle being teenagers in high school with this tricky predicament they are in. My character, Ryan, is one of the kids they encounter in high school and you first meet me in the drama department, where I have a huge crush on Katie.
If you weren’t working on your career as an actor, what kind of career would you want to have?
If I wasn’t working as an actor, I would be a writer or a director or probably both. I have always loved movies and television. I can see myself in the shoes of those individuals and loving it. Also, I have dabbled in some writing and directing and I’ve got the “bug,” which means I can’t get enough!
What does a typical day of not working on set look like for you?
My typical day off set looks like waking up and going to the gym to train and box. After that, I’d get some food and go home to read a book or watch a movie. I would probably end the day hanging out with family and friends, cooking a meal and then, going out for dessert. I also take online college classes, so sometimes I have homework.
What are some of your favorite shows to binge on these days?
Right now, I am binging the “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which is hysterical. I’m also watching The Sopranos and the newest season of “True Detective” with Mahershala Ali, and I just started “The Kominsky Method”, because I have been hearing good things.
We look forward to seeing you on Alexa & Katie. What other projects do you have coming up?
I have other things coming up that I’m not at liberty to discuss. I know that sounds cliché but it’s true!!!!! 😉
