10 THINGS with Steven Bauer

Who would ever thought that a Cuban national who also played in the famous film, Scarface, would have a long standing career as you today, congrats! As you look back on your successful career, what have been some of your most memorable moments thus far?
Well, I have to say that my first experiences were very memorable; working with Al Pacino and the great ensemble of actors on Scarface, doing scenes with Rod Steiger and shooting locations all over Europe and Isreal for Sword of Gideon. Then, a year later, retuning to Israel to play an Afghan fighting the Russians (and learning and having to deliver my dialogue in Pashto) on the film, The Beast. Of course, in recent years, I’ve had the good fortune to be part of, and work with, the cast and crew of Breaking Bad in the fourth season. And now, I’m experiencing new memorable moments with the cast of Ray Donovan

What made you decide to get into acting in the first place?

As a child, growing up in Miami in the sixties, I had the opportunity to see some movies that sparked my imagination of lives, that we’re so far removed from my life, with my family. I decided I had to do something with my life that would afford me the opportunity to visit many lives, eras and places.

You’ve done tons of films and TV shows, playing a variety of characters. Which types of roles do you gravitate to the most?

I gravitate to roles that offer me the opportunity to learn about myself, an aspect of life that I was not previous familiar with; multi-dimensional characters, and characters who are facing great challenges.

All these roles have afforded you the opportunity to play alongside almost everyone in this business. Which actors would you want the chance the work with and why?

I would love to work with Jack Nicholson because I like his sense of humor and intelligence. I would love to work with De Niro for the same reason and of course, I would love to work with Al Pacino again. There are also some young actors whose senses of humor I am drawn to and I think it would be fun to collaborate with that type of actor, such as Seth Rogen and James Franco.

You’re now on Showtime’s Ray Donovan. How were you first introduced to the series and what were some reasons why you selected to jump on board?

The show’s creator, Ann Bidermann, knew my work and felt I could bring a unique dimension and style to the character of Avi. I was only too happy to be asked to join such an illustrious cast.

Let’s talk more about your character, Avi, who’s quite the character himself. What is the good and bad of Avi and what do you enjoy about playing him the most?

Avi is a good guy at heart with some hard sides, from a life of military and intelligence service. If he has any flaws, it is that he is fiercely loyal, almost to a fault, and will often place his loyal tendencies even ahead of professional orders. But those usually end up being good qualities. He also has a sense of humor about the world, and specifically, the type of individuals he interacts with in the world of the rich, powerful and corrupt.

What we like about Avi is that he can sense when something is wrong or off. And when it comes to Ray, it always seems to be wrong, even if it’s for the right reason. Will we see Avi stand up to Ray more, as the season goes on or will he go for status quo?

I can only say that Avi and Ray’s relationship will continue to have its ups and downs – not always predictably.

What can viewers expect to see from Avi and the rest of the gang, for the rest of the season?

Viewers can expect to see more complex and interesting storylines. I’m not really at liberty to speak about the direction of my character or the show.

You’re a cool breeze kind of guy, but when it comes to fashion, what styles would we typically find in your closet?

I like to buy clothes when I travel and integrate different cultures in what I wear. My favorite designers are Robert Graham, Ted Baker, Hugo Boss, Armani, Diesel, Lucky, etc.

Thanks for chatting with us. Besides Showtime’s Ray Donovan, what other projects do you have coming up in the near future?

I have a few films in the works right now, and another TV project that my partner and I are developing.
