10 THINGS – Zane Holtz
How did you get your start as an actor?
One of my first jobs was in Holes….I’m the kid at the beginning of Holes who gets bit by a rattle snake and dies, basically making room for Shia’s character. Then, when I was 13, I was in an episode of CSI and did a few other small parts. I later went to Lee Strasberg and have been supporting myself as an actor ever since.
Who are some actors, which career and body of work, have impressed you and had a positive effect on your career?
Actors I really like are Benicio Del Toro, Viggo Mortenson, Denzel Washington and Leonardo DiCaprio, and of course Gerard Butler! So, I was so happy to get to work with him in Hunter Killer.
You’re most notable for your work on From Dusk Till Dawn. What were some of your memorable moments working on that show?
Just being cast by Robert was a cool experience in itself. He and Quentin cast outside the box. So falling into that slot was amazing. Then, I was gifted an amazing character with whom I got to grow with, over the 3 seasons. And the awesome cast, some of whom I’m still close to, like Wilmer Valderrama, D.J. Cotrona and Jesse Garcia are some of my best friends.
You have a couple of projects that you’re working on. Let’s first talk about Hunter Killer. How were you first introduced to the project and what made you decide to take this on?
I auditioned once in 2015 unsuccessfully, then it came back around in 2016 and I got the job! I’ve been a fan of Gerard Butler since 300 and was so excited to work with him. Hunter Killer has tons of stunts and action, and it was amazing to do all of that.
What is the premise of the film and where does your character, Paul Martinelli, fit into the scheme of things?
Paul is the youngest recruit on the 4-man team. I’m a sniper trying to prove my merit to Toby and the team. At first, I struggle to do so, but ultimately prove my worth as an invaluable member of the team.
Your other film is Beyond The Night, where you play the role of Ray Marrow. What do you enjoy most about brining Ray’s character to life?
Playing Ray was an opportunity to portray the relationship between a father and son on screen. It’s something with which I have a lot of experience in real life but did not have the opportunity to do as an actor.
If you had a dream project, what would it look like and which actors would you include in it?
I’d do an original action story and bring all my buddies from Dusk till Dawn and play different characters…and just make a cool, edgy story.
Let’s just say that you had a switch in careers. What field would you be in and why?
I’ve done Brazilian jiu-jitsu for 15 years, so I’d probably be a jiujitsu instructor.
When it comes to fashion, which fashion designers and styles appeal to your sense of style?
Honestly, most of the time I wear Nike workout clothing or Levi’s and t-shirts. I’m currently wearing a suit on loan from Strong Suit. It’s beautiful, but I have to give it back.
We look forward to seeing you in both films. What other projects do you have coming up in the near future?
Hopefully, Hunter Killer smashes it and we make 4 of those, haha. Other than that, I’m looking at various projects and am excited to see what the future holds.
