Fall on 5th Avenue New York

The Fall Season is finally upon us and nowhere is that more evident than in New York on 5th Avenue, one of the most celebrated shopping Avenues in the World.

Fifth Avenue, the street that would become the social spine of New York, first appeared on the Commissioners’ Map of 1811. At that time, it was merely a country road to Yorkville, but in the proposed grid plan it would be a grand boulevard. As the city grew and prospered, Fifth Avenue became synonymous with fashionable life, the site of mansions, cultural and social institutions, and restaurants and shops catering to the elite. In the late 1800s, the widespread availability of plate glass allowed store owners to build large windows spanning the lengths of their shops where merchandise from the store could be appealingly displayed to draw in customers. Thus the notion of “window-shopping” was born.

If you are looking for sexy and avantgarde, go to Versace. If you are a traditionalist head to Polo, Ralph Lauren, even though the windows are appealing to the sexy traveler this season. If you want fun and flirty, Dolce and Gabbana, is pretty in pink and scream “luxury, look at Me”! I am in love with the polka dots at Bottega Veneta and the teal blue boots are everything. The silver Gucci baseball jacket should be in everyone’s closet along with that Flowered backpack.

Menswear is well represented at Bergdorf Goodman with  a beautiful hounds tooth Tuxedo and the camel overcoat at Gucci will last a lifetime. No trip down 5th Avenue would be complete without a Diamond from Tiffany and Co. and they have lots of lovely baubles to choose from. My absolute favorite window is Ermenegildo Zegna, those Huge Needles just speak to the Designer in me. Happy shopping!
