10 THINGS – Christina Anthony

10 Things about Christina Anthony

You’re originally from Chicago where you’re well known for your comedic prowess. When did you realize that you wanted to be in the entertainment industry and how did you get your start?

I’ve always been a natural performer, but the decision to start my training after completing college in another field was truly a bet on myself. I got my start in musical theater in the black box theatre scene in Chicago. But, I eventually honed my comedic voice at The Second City.

Which entertainers body of work has made a lasting impression on you and a positive impact on your career?

I love how Donald Glover has made such smooth transitions between improv, writing, acting, producing and creating music. He reminds me to follow my desire to do it all. Also, I want to be on Atlanta, Donald.

Currently, you’re on ABC’s Mixed-ish. Walk us through the process. How were you first introduced to the series and what was it about the script that resounded with you to jump on board?

I read about the Black-ish spinoff (that would become Mixed-ish) like everyone else did in the trades. When I read the role of Denise, it was clear that she was a fully formed woman, completely different from the rest of the family who had been living on a commune. I recognized her authenticity and realness immediately and knew I would say yes, if I was offered the role.

On the show, you play the role of Denise. What can you tell us about her personality and what you enjoy most about playing her on screen?

Denise is outspoken and unfiltered. I love that she expresses her blackness boldly and proudly with her wigs, wardrobe, and wit.

Are there any similarities between you and Denise that you were able to bring to the role?

Yes! We look exactly alike. I am obsessed with my nieces and am a doting aunt, just like Denise.  I also wear wigs.

Comedy is meant to be funny but it’s also meant to send a message. What message do you hope viewers glean from watching the show?

Denise reminds me and young Rainbow (and I hope viewers) that it is okay to take up space and fully be your wonderful self. I also hope our show demonstrates that families aren’t perfect, but constant effort to grow and understand each other daily is what makes a loving and successful family.

Are there any plans of you jumping back on stage and doing stand up?

Currently, I perform with my improv group called Black People around L.A. I hope to do more standup, though Mixed-ish has me busy until March shooting. We just got a full season order!

Let’s just say that you weren’t working on your career as an entertainer. What else could you see yourself doing career wise?

Do I need to be good at it? I love to cook, so I guess being a chef and having a restaurant would be a dream. I should mention my culinary training consists of watching Chopped.

Fashion and entertainment go hand in hand. Which designers and styles appeal most to your personality?

Ten percent of the time, I’m a minimalist, so Cushnie. But, I’m really a maximalist and love Laquan Smith, Brother Vellies, Christian Siriano. And since being on Mixed-ish, our Costume Designer Ceci has turned me onto vintage Versace and Escada.

Thank you for sharing your work with us. What other projects do you have coming up in the near future?

I’ve been working on material for my comedy special and I’m writing and developing a couple of pilots of my own. This is just the beginning!
