10 THINGS – Madison Margot

10 Things about Madison Margot

You were born and raised in Los Angeles. Did you always know that you would be working in entertainment?

I guess I did always know! L.A. is interesting because a family could be walking through the mall and talent agents will stop them and recruit their child. You couldn’t escape Hollywood even if you tried! But singing and writing music is something that came naturally, so I think that being born in another city wouldn’t have stopped me from wanting to pursue it!

When did your love for music develop and how did you get your start into making this a career move for you?

I remember being 3 years old and singing ‘God Bless America’ in our kitchen. My mom had this idea that it would be cute to record it and pass it out with our Christmas card. I guess that was the beginning, haha! I just kept singing and dreaming of being Britney Spears! Then suddenly, I’m noticing melodies coming to my head, and lyrics, and it became something I couldn’t turn off. So, I just knew this was my heart and my truth. There has been no other career idea or option. Nothing else excites me.

Which other musicians do you look up to and which ones have had a positive impact on your career thus far?

Taylor Swift has been a part of me since elementary school. She truly has impacted the way that I carry myself and see the world of music. The way she tells stories always let me know that it was okay for me to be honest and ruthless in my songwriting. J Cole is another major influence. His concepts are so creative and unique. I believe in storytelling, good performing, and playing instruments! Vanessa Carlton, Gwen Stefani, Haim, Mariah Carey- they all have inspired me so much!

Your latest single “In the morning” will debut its new music video soon. What is the message behind the song and what was the concept for the video?

“In the Morning” is a song about longing for someone who only shows you their feelings when it’s convenient for them. It’s about being a hopeless romantic and hanging onto every word you hear, believing every word you hear, all to find out that none of it meant anything. The music video is one giant dream. It is a glamorous slumber, showing me chasing after that kind of elusive love. It is so unique, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it!

Aid for Africa is an organization that supports innovation education and leadership program for women and girls in Africa in order to transform marginalized rural areas into thriving communities. What is your involvement with the organization and how can others get involved?

Aid for Africa is truly incredible. I always love to go on their website and read about the projects they are doing and see what they need. I love donating to them because I trust their work and know that it is making a difference! I would love to get even more involved in the next year.

It’s so good that you’re using your platform to help make other peoples lives better. This is on top of what you work through being a musician in this business. What are some of the obstacles you’ve had to overcome and how are you meeting these challenges?

Navigating life can be challenging! You never know what will be thrown your way. Last year, I had a life-threatening health issue. I had to pause music for a bit and heal. I am healthy now, thank God! But I still have moments where I don’t feel my best. I am lucky to have amazing people in my life who are there for me when I need them! So, I hope to be there for those who are struggling. I think being a good neighbor is important.

In addition to making good music, social justice is also important to you. What can you tell us about some of the initiatives you’re involved in?

I graduated from college with a Bachelor’s degree in Gender and Women’s Studies. I’m an intersectional feminist and enjoy activism work. I want to live in a world where there is social, political, and economic equality. So, I am constantly involved in those initiatives.

If you weren’t working on your career as a musician, what other career could you see yourself doing?

Probably a wedding planner. I am obsessed with love and romance, so that would be the most fitting! Or maybe an astronaut! Or a cake designer.

When it comes to fashion, which designers and styles are your favorites and appeal most to your personality?

I am a big fan of Ralph Lauren. I think his styles are so crisp and classic! I also love Gucci and Chanel for their feminine, bold statements. When shopping, I typically will go to Zara, Topshop, Levi’s, etc. They always have a mix of classic and trendy. My everyday go-to is a great jean with a white sneaker and fun blouse!

We look forward to your latest video. What other projects do you have coming up in the near future?

I am working on new music. I have a beautiful song on deck! I think a lot of people will be able to relate to it. I am excited for all that is to come. I’m very inspired and writing a lot! Thank you so so much! This was such a fun interview!
