10 Things about Mignon
You’re originally from Washington D.C. and grew up in Georgia. When did you realize that you would embark on a career as an actress and how did you initially get your start?
I’ve always wanted to be an actress. But, real decisive and hell bent for glory action was taken, later in life. After attending film school, working in education, working behind the scenes in production on indies and TV shows, I decided it was time for me to really go after it.
Which actors body of work impressed you and helped you get on the track you’re currently on?
Several really, from my earliest years to now, including Whoopi Goldberg, Angela Bassett, Joan Cusack, Jenifer Lewis, Denzel Washington, Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Kerry Washington, Ben Stiller, Alan Tudyk, and Viola Davis.
Although you’ve only been acting for a few short years, you’ve already started making your mark on the hit BET series, Sistas. How were you first introduced to the show and what was it about the script that made you want to be a part of it?
Actors Access. I submitted for a few shows that TPS was casting at the time. They asked me to read for Danni. As they say, the rest is history.
On the show, you play the role of Daniella King, better known as Danni. For those who haven’t tuned in just yet, what can you tell us about her personality and what you enjoyed most about bringing her character to life?
Danni is fiercely loyal, honest to her detriment at times and wants the best for everyone. At times, she gets in her own way but she is definitely sharp and astute. She’s so unique and hilarious without trying. She’s good fun, layered, and emotionally complex.
What can fans and viewers expect to see from Danni and the rest of the cast on this next part of the season?
Oh, drama, drama, drama, you gotta tune in. Let’s just say it gets bumpier before it gets smoother.
Besides working as an actress, you also have experience working behind the lens. Where did your love for working in this capacity come from?
Directing comes naturally. Frankly, watching the limited stories being told about people who look like me, made the skills surface out of necessity.
In 2018, you wrote, directed and executive produced an original short film titled 42 SECONDS. The crowdfunded drama screened at the Women in Film and Television, Atlanta Short Film Showcase and garnered you the award for Best Director. Given your success with this film, what more are you looking to accomplish in this space?
So much more. I’m writing features films now.
Let’s just say for a moment that you weren’t working on your career in entertainment, what other career could you see yourself in?
Not sure, probably health and nutrition. I really want to open a healthy and delicious restaurant. Even indulgent foods would be wholesome and nutritious.
When it comes to fashion, what fashion designers and styles appeal most to your personality?
My style is elegant, sexy, boho bombshell with a bit of whimsy. Oscar de la Renta is my oldie but goodie. I love Free People as well. I’m looking at more and more black owned labels and houses to support. Fashion hasn’t been inclusive either and I’m aware that until it is, I will have to be intentional in searching for black owned, especially black woman owned lines.
We look forward to seeing your work on BET’s Sistas. What other projects do you have coming up in the near future?
My own! Stay tuned.
