DESIGNER PROFILE – Benito Santos

How did you get your start as a designer and what were some motivating factors that led you to that decision?

Since I was a child, I loved drawing and lighting strokes and silhouettes. I used to spend hours creating and imagining dresses. Thanks to my maternal grandmother, I learned to develop the passion for fashion. She embroidered garments and I spent all my afternoons at her house watching her creations. Although I graduated from medicine, it was always in my heart, that great concern for dressing the beauty of the Mexican woman.

Which designers do you look up and which ones have influenced your career thus far?

Definitely Valentino, it’s my favorite.

Being a designer means having the ability to meet obstacles and challenges. What have been some challenges that you’ve had to overcome from the creative side as well as the business side?

You always have to be able to reinvent, on the creative side, make collections based on a research and to be able to show your own concept and style. And, of course, being able to capture all of these things in a collection.

Regarding the brand side, it’s essential to offer a better service every day, always increasing the quality and offer better products. It’s what makes you competitive. A good and competitive brand needs to be profitable, generate sources of employment and generate industry change in order to show growth.

To say that your show at MBFW Mexico was amazing, would be an understatement! What was the inspiration behind the Spring Collection – Summer 2019 “PUEBLERINA” and why did you select to show at the Angel de la Independencia?

Presented for the first time on the MBFWMx platform. We have made garments in white, black and bicolor. The details with the ribbons, fringes, spikelets, laces, tassels and “rebozos,” spruced up the garments, giving it an identity and authenticity inspired by the photography of rural Mexico by Gabriel Figueroa at the time of Mexican gold cinema.

Textures in spandex, taffeta, sequins and organza silks, were chosen to make this collection. Hand-made illustrations of sketched faces of the most emblematic characters, as well as iconic landscapes, from Figueroa´s photography were features in the collection.

We had a wonderful venue (Angel de la Independencia). It’s always an excellent location to do runways and, one of the most iconic locations in Mexico. We decided to do 360º runway because it comes more impactful with 61 looks and different models. It also celebrated my 10 years in this industry.

When it comes to you, which designers and styles do you gravitate to personally?

I always have loved creating designs for women. My greatest inspiration is women. I like to create my designs detailing the woman’s body with elegant & glamorous designs where they are the protagonist of each of them. My favorite and most inspirational designer has been Valentino.
