You have quite the story about your start as a designer. What is your backstory? When did your love for fashion begin and how did you go about getting started?
I would say that fashion captured more my attention. When I entered University back in 2003, my interest started and kept evolving through time, until it became more of a passion. At a certain time of my life, back in 2018, I decided to convert this passion into a real business.
Some are inspired by what they see, feel or experience. What inspires you to create?
I get inspired by art, architects and jewelry. Integrating them all, in one way or another, the collection idea came to me one by one and lined up in consistent way. The final touches were done on the prototypes. When I get the physical designs, I get more creative and playful.
Which designers have had a positive impact on your career and which ones have inspired you, to put your best foot forward?
Many actually! The fashion industry is full of talented strong designers. I’d start with DVF, the role model of a successful self-made business woman. And Ralph Lauren, the man with distinctive taste in fashion who built the most successful empire in the fashion industry. Looking back into the designer’s biography and educational background, both DVF and Lauren didn’t study fashion design, Yet, they succeeded, making a huge impact on the fashion world. It gave me confidence in stepping into the fashion world, armed with my passion and will to succeed.
Footwear is not as easy as some may think. What other some challenges you encounter in this line of work?
It’s a very challenging industry. On one hand, I need to be the boss lady looking over the manufacturing, packaging, delivery, finance, and maintain our brand marketing strategy. And, on the other hand I have to keep educating myself more about footwear designs and follow trend compass. Although these are all challenges, I see it as a journey and I’m willing to enjoy every step.
How do you stay competitive in a highly saturated market?
My label is different, it has to be! I come from a Kuwaiti “Arabian” background & I integrated modern elements inspired by ancient history into my Arabian sense of fashion. Every designer bring some of their own soul into their line and that is what makes them different. I have faith that customers are smart and that they sense the iconic style and the quality in my designs.
What kind of woman would you say wears a CARAT shoe?
A confident, powerful yet feminine woman. CARAT designs are made for a woman who command attention, making a statement when entering a room and leave an impression when they leave.
What are some valuable lessons that you’ve learned yourself and advice that you would pass on to others trying to do the same?
Follow your guts. Do not wait for the perfect time, it might never come. And, always motivate yourself. After all, its your dream!
When it comes to fashion for yourself, which designers are your favorite and which styles do you prefer for your personality?
Giuseppe Zanotti is one my favorite. He makes artistic items. I love almost all his designs. Gianvito Rossi & the Plexi PVC pump is a “must-have” for every working lady. It goes along with any work outfit. Sophia Webster’s winged sandal for special evenings. Coliac ballet flat is one of my casual-chic favourite flats as well.
If you weren’t working on your career as a footwear designer, what type of career would you consider doing instead?
I’m actually a senior geologist and I’m still working in the oil industry. The footwear designing is my passion career that I chose to carry on after spending more than 10 years in the oil industry.
What’s next on the agenda for you and what can we look forward to seeing from you in the near future?
