How did you get your start as a designer and what were some motivating factors that led you to that decision?
I think that I always have been a fashion consumer and I never felt really involved with any brand in a personal way. So for me, it was really important to create a brand that looks and feels like the things I was living in my daily life. That’s the I began GALO BERTIN. As a menswear brand, it was so important to create products with soul and with stories for anyone.
Which designers do you look up to and which ones have influenced your career thus far?
I think TOM FORD is one of my biggest inspirations. I love the way he makes fashion so elegant, so bolt and so sexy. That’s something that has caught my attention since I saw his work and I love it.
Being a designer means having the ability to meet obstacles and challenges. What have been some challenges that you’ve had to overcome from the creative side as well as the business side?
Now a days, the consumer is evolving so quickly that as a designer, you have to see these changes and react to them. The most difficult thing, is to preserve the soul of your brand and try to satisfy the needs of the market. It’s a really tricky thing to have in mind the business and the creative part, in the brand. But, this is the secret to success.
Your runway show provided the audience with messages of love and acceptance. What was your inspiration behind the latest collection and what do you hope the audience came away with?
I think that in these days, to have a statement is really important. That’s the difference between fashion and other industries. For me, this collection talks about this moment of my life in which I’m surrounded by love in all ways. And also LOVE has many faces and it’s important to make the audience to notice that.
What advice would you give to other fashion designers looking to get into the business?
The most important thing is to always have in mind that fashion is a business. You have to work hard to achieve your goals. It’s really important that your work, your style and your designs speak for themselves. Never go into fashion hoping to be famous, that’s not the goal.
When it comes to you, which designers and styles do you gravitate to personally?
I’m a really classic man. I love a good jacket, a good blazer and a fine shirt. I love black, marine and gray. I can define my style like a new classic style.
What do you have coming up in the near future?
GALO BERTIN is expanding in Mexico. We are working hard to make the brand to become the most important menswear brand in our country. There’s a lot of work that we have coming up in the future.
