How did you get your start as a designer and what were some motivating factors that led you to that decision?
I began designing as a young girl and found my passion doing it. I have never stopped since. I found inspiration in every aspect of my childhood, simple things like my grandparents’ house, and the places I visited when I was younger. This still inspires me to this day. The support of the people around me helped me take the risk and move forward with every challenge that came with the journey.
Which designers do you look up to and which ones have influenced your career thus far?
I look up to many designers; their individuality and innovation help me believe in my own. I admire my fellow Mexican designers who fight similar fights in the Mexican market and also other international designers such as Victoria Beckham and Isabel Marant.
Being a designer means having the ability to meet obstacles and challenges. What have been some challenges that you have had to overcome from the creative side as well as the business side?
Being a designer in Mexico is particularly challenging. Understating what the public wants is a learning curve. Over my years in fashion, I have understood that not all of your work designing is for the clients, you also have to design for yourself to stay true to your vision and DNA. The troubles in the business side are what keeps us motivated and always coming up with our next great business idea.
Your recent show at MBFW Mexico featured fabrics and colors that read very feminine and confident. What was your inspiration behind the latest collection?
My inspiration for a collection seldom comes from one thing/event in particular. It’s a creative mess really. It comes to me that day, from a picture of my past, or from something I’ve just read or seen and it all connects in my head. It starts to make sense and then, I go from there. In this case, the colors in the collection were a major inspiration.
What advice would you give to other fashion designers looking to get into the business?
I would say, stay true to what your DNA says. The trends come and go, but what is transcendent is staying true to your style, your aesthetic. Influence is normal but never lose yourself in trying to please others.
When it comes to you, which designers and styles do you gravitate to personally?
I make clothes I personally love. People that know me outside of interviews and public affairs will agree, I love to wear the clothes I design. They are meant to be worn by every woman, in their everyday lives.
What do you have coming up in the near future?
I guess we will find out in my next collection. All I can say is you won’t be disappointed.
