You’re originally from England. How did you get your start as an actor?
I was fortunate enough to get work experience on a Harry Potter film in the camera department, because of a family friend who was focus pulling. That was my first experience in film. And, also, where I was given my first opportunity to be in front of the camera too and it was there, how I met my first agent.
What were some of the motivating factors that led to pursuing acting full time?
A lot of people told me it would never happen and I would never succeed. This is where my drive and ambition to succeed began. Also, having been a film geek from a young age, being inspired by iconic characters and films, I always wanted to one day, potentially be of equal inspiration.
You’ve done a fair amount of television work as well as film. Is there a platform that you prefer over the other?
Film was always the main goal but television is now at such a high standard. To be a part of a great series would be an equal level of achievement.
Northern Soul is a project that you’re well known for. You played the role of John Clark. What did you enjoy most from working on that film?
It was an incredible experience being given so many elements and challenges to develop myself as an actor. Dancing, weight loss, and the northern accent. Also, developing a character whose personality goes from one end of the spectrum to the other was a really nice aspect to the role.
Which actors have had the most profound effect on your career thus far and which ones career would you want to emulate?
Arnold Schwarzenegger has been an icon to me from a young age. But, obviously, he isn’t someone I could emulate. In terms of admiring someone’s choices and career, Jake Gyllenhaal has had some amazing projects that he has been incredible in. It would be great to have a career that constantly progresses like his has.
Let’s chat about the work you’re doing this calendar year, Let’s Be Evil and Beautiful Devils. What was it about the scripts that made you want to jump on board?
It was great to be offered two completely different roles. I was excited to play an American in Lets be Evil and also its a Sci-fi thriller. It’s a totally different world to Northern Soul. Whereas in Beautiful Devils, (an adaptation of Othello), I was fortunate enough to play Lago, one of Shakespeare’s most iconic villains, which is an opportunity any actor would be grateful to take. It was great to adapt a very current, contemporary version of this iconic character!
What are the biggest challenges to your work and how do you manage the peaks/ valleys that come your way?
In terms of the job, my biggest challenge is my dyslexia and learning scripts, particularly when auditioning! But, when things are quiet, I do a lot of my own writing to keep me feeling creative and motivated.
When you’re not busy working on and perfecting your craft, what do you typically do to relax?
Being a film geek, I spend most of my spare time watching films and keeping up to date with whats going on in the industry.
Fashion is a part of this business, whether you on set or on the red carpet promoting the work. Which styles fit your personality the most?
I don’t take what I wear too seriously. I just like to be comfortable and casual.
What projects do you have coming up in the near future?
A director I worked with on one of my previous features, has asked to be in his next film. Again, a very different part and another role I’ll be able to do quite a lot with. But, there’s not much I can say right now! I’ve also written a pilot called No Hopers, which is based on my experiences in a British boarding school which I’m hoping to direct next year!
