10 Things about Faly Rakotohavana
Faly, thank you for joining us today. Let’s start with your career. How did you first get into acting?
I started acting when I was about 10. I started in musical theater and then went onto film and TV through an acting boot camp called CGTV. I heard a call on the radio to be on Disney Channel! I had always wanted to be on the Disney Channel, so I called them and auditioned…it turned out to be an audition for CGTV. I met my agent and manager through them and was eventually on Disney Channel so I can’t complain.
You’re starring in the hit series “UnPrisoned” with Kerry Washington. Can you tell us a bit about your character and the premise of the show?
The show is about a man getting out of prison and his family that he hasn’t seen in 17 years helping him readjust to society. Kerry Washington plays Paige and I play her son Finn. He’s a super low-key guy, a bit of a nerd but so wholesome.
How has it been working with Kerry Washington and the rest of the cast?
The entire cast are inspirations to me! There was not a single day on set that I felt uninspired. Watching all of them work to find their truths really pushed me to find my own.
Your career is still young, but you’ve already had some impressive roles. What has been your most memorable experience so far?
I have love for a lot of my roles for different reasons. I do have to say that “UnPrisoned” has stuck with me the most because I feel like I have learned so much, not only about acting, but just life in general.
How do you prepare for a new role and which actor’s style or body of work do you tap into as you’re getting to take on the role?
I read the script over and over again so I can try to find truth and authenticity in every line and action. In recent times I have really been paying close attention to Delroy Lindo. He is always in his script…always. It’ll be a scene that has maybe five lines and he’s scribbling away in his script! If he doesn’t believe it, he won’t do it and I strive to find that kind of honesty.
You’ve developed a unique fashion sense. How would you describe your personal style?
Honestly, I just like what I like. I try to wear things that everybody else isn’t to separate myself from the crowd a little bit.
Who are your fashion inspirations and favorite designers?
David Bowie, obviously. I feel like he is everybody’s inspiration. I work with a stylist named Enrique Melendez and he was gifted from god with a sense of fashion. I am never disappointed when I step into his studio.
Do you have a favorite travel destination or places on your bucket list?
I loved Barcelona! It has to be one of my favorite places in the world as of right now because there is so much culture, music, and food. The food is so good! I also love Atlantis, Bahamas. Atlantis is a little more boujee but always so much fun.
In terms of work, what’s next for you, can you share any details about upcoming projects?
“UnPrisoned” Season 2 is coming out July 17th which is right around the corner. We’ve got a bigger cast, more problems, and more laughs!
Lastly, what advice would you give to other young actors who are just starting out in the industry?
All the advice I’ve ever given has come back to bite me, so I’m still figuring this out too. If I had to give any advice that I know for sure has worked for me, it would be to stay in your acting classes!
