10 THINGS – Jennifer Cheon Garcia

Jennifer Cheon Garcia – 10 Things

When did you decide that being an actor was the career path for you and how did you get your start?

2009 was when I decided to really go for it, to stop listening to all the reasons why I shouldn’t and just do it. I was always performing. I went from dance to modeling to theatre and now, to this.

Your family background originates from Mexico and Korea. You were born in Canada. To say that you’re diverse is an understatement and wonderful at that. How have you used this as an advantage as you navigate the changing entertainment industry today?

I’m really happy that now it’s considered an advantage. But to be honest, I’m just so happy that I get to be a part of this change. I’m happy that now, girls and boys that look like me, can see themselves.

You’ve done a fair amount of television and film projects. What do you enjoy about both platforms and what types of characters are you driven by?

I love that I get to tell stories and play for a living. On any platform, the chance to work with creative people, have fun and at times intersect with characters and material that l feel are important, is really a dream come true for me.

Let’s talk about your latest project, Syfy’s Van Helsing. How were you first introduced to the series and what was it about the script that made you excited to jump on board?

I knew about the show because of a longtime friend, Aleks Paunovic, who plays ‘Julius.’ I started watching the show from Season 1, and loved how it had a mixture of ass-kicking’s and drama, which are all things I enjoy.

On the show, you play the role of Ivory. What can you tell us about her personality, the good and the bad?

The bad: She eats humans. The good: She is a fearless warrior that never compromises her code for anyone or anything.

What do you enjoy most about bringing her personality to life?

I love that I get to show the audience a different type of vampire. She looks terrifying and animalistic, but she is very grounded.

What can you share with us about the new season, Ivory’s role and what we can expect to see from the rest of the cast?

You’ll see a more vulnerable side of her. You’ll see our cast grow this season and you’ll see our apocalyptic world grow much more.

When you’re not working on set, what does a typical day look like for you and what activities do you enjoy doing?

A typical day when I’m not working on set starts with a shake and coffee with my husband and a walk or hike with our dog. I’m working on a script of my own right now. So, I dive into that for as long as my brain will allow me too. I’m also training for my Black Belt in Taekwondo. I’ve set a goal for myself to have it by May 2020. So, I train everyday so I can achieve that goal. I really love it!

When it comes to fashion, which designers are your favorites and which styles appeal most to your personality?

Oh my Gawd, I love fashion. I’ve been glued to my phone for SS20. I love so many designers. My style is a mash up for Bond girl meets Tomgirl. I grew up on the West Coast so those vibes always come through.

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us. What other projects do you have coming up in the near future?

Thank you! And thank you to everyone for your support! I am excited to tell you about Supergirl. I’m joining the cast as the super villain ‘Midnight.’ I hope you guys tune and a watch it!
