10 THINGS – Stephanie Turner

10 Things about Stephanie Turner

As a writer, actor, director, and filmmaker, you’re a one woman show! When did you decide to get into the business and how did you get your start?

I got into the business as an actress first. As a kid, I always loved film and TV and dreamed of becoming an actress. I think I really loved the idea of storytelling but at that time it honestly didn’t cross my mind that I could be the one writing and directing the stories. I just didn’t see a lot of women being acknowledged for doing that. So, after I graduated high school, I moved to L.A. and enrolled in a two-year acting school, got my first agent, and started auditioning for roles. Years later, I began writing and everything evolved from there.

Which others in the industry, whether in front of the screen or behind the scenes, had a profound impact on your own career?

I admire so many people in the industry, it’s difficult to put them all in a list! My two acting coaches D.W. Brown and Howard Fine taught me the craft of acting and that it is truly the study of people and humanity. Ava DuVernay and the example she has set had a huge impact on my taking action to start a production company and make my first feature film “Justine.” So many other women have influenced me or inspired me to continue working and moving forward such as: Maya Angelou, Oprah, Pamela Adlon, Mindy Kaling, Issa Rae, Amy Schumer, Lena Dunham, Tina Fey, Lena Waithe… and many others!

Currently, you’re on the Netflix original film, “Justine”. How were you first introduced to the project and what was it about the script that made you want to jump on board?

I wrote the first draft of the script in the Fall of 2013 based on a kernel of an idea I had. I wanted to write a feature film that could be made on a low budget with a character that was complex and would be interesting to play.

The film is about a single mom who’s forced to move in with her father-in-law after her husband dies. The job that she takes on puts her in a racist environment. How were you able to navigate a difficult subject and keep it authentic in this film?

I always felt that this film was about people and their relationships and these are the circumstances in which they happen to find themselves. I never felt the film was about “issues.” I tried to focus on the intentions of the characters and my intention in making the film, in order to keep everything grounded. I feel fortunate that all of the actors believed in the story and felt strongly about portraying their characters authentically.

On “Justine”, you play the role of Lisa Wade. What Can you tell us about her personality and what you enjoy most about bringing her character to life?

I think Lisa refuses to apologize for the way she feels and refuses to appease society with the normal niceties we all typically  abide by. I like that about her. I think she says things to people that we all want to say but we don’t because we’re afraid of how we’ll be perceived, as an actor, that was fun.

What can viewers expect to see from the film and what message do you hope gets received from people watching it?

My hope overall is just that people are open to receiving the story, open to really seeing and getting to know the characters. And, I hope they laugh in a few places.

What advice would you give to other young women who are looking to get behind the scenes and develop a career much like yours?

My advice would be to keep going, keep finding ways to work, keep collaborating with other artists to build your community.  Write your own stuff, research the labs/workshops/grants for women that apply to what it is you’re pursuing. Work on projects with friends and sometimes that means working for free. Find ways to keep doing what you love.

If you weren’t working in the entertainment business, what career would you delve into instead?

I would be a social worker or therapist. I enjoy connecting with people, that’s why I’m an actor and filmmaker. I like to really know people and their stories.

When it comes to fashion, which designers and styles appeal most to your personality?

I don’t really follow the fashion world too closely. I wish I were more fashionable! I tend to buy and wear things that are easy. I’m definitely a jeans and t-shirt person, but I also like to have a few casual day dresses that are easy to throw on in my closet each season.

What other projects do you have coming up in the near future?

I’m working on setting up my next feature film and I’m also developing a half hour dramedy TV series.
