10 Things about Adam Korson
You’re originally from Toronto, Canada where you were trained in acting, singing and dancing from an early age. When did you know that you wanted to work in the entertainment industry and how did you initially get your start?
When I was a child, every Saturday, my parents would take me and my sisters to the video store to rent a movie. We would pick one and my parents would pick one. And, we would have a picnic on the floor eating the pizza, while watching the films. So, my first real education into film, which drove my passion, truly stems from those Saturday nights watching John Candy movies, Spencer Tracey, James Stewart, and Alfred Hitchcock, just to name a few. This launched me into creating my own films at home with the family camcorder, auditioning and taking parts in school plays. And, eventually, auditioning for the college conservatory program at Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts, which gave me a solid foundation needed to start my professional career.
Which actors careers have you been impressed by and which ones would you want to work with, if given the opportunity?
The actors and creatives I’ve always been most impressed with are the ones that actually do the work. I have been extremely fortunate to work with some of the greats, legends really, but the actor I would love the opportunity to play with and collaborate alongside would be Al Pacino.
Currently, you’re on the SYFY series “SurrealEstate”. How were you first introduced to the series and what made you excited to take part in it?
Like most things, this came to me through my agent. I fell in love with the story and concept immediately. George Olson, creator of the series, was able to blend a perfect balance between the dramatic, the comedic and the supernatural. Once I started delving into Father Phil, I started uncovering all these beautiful layers to him, placed there by George. As you get deeper into the first season, these layers become revealed to the audience, as is the case with all the characters.
You mentioned playing the role of Father Phil Orley. What can you tell us about his personality and the aspects of his character that you enjoy playing on screen?
Father Phil Orley is a fallen priest. That alone sums up a lot about him. He grew up in the Catholic church and devoted his life to it, in order to fight evil and bring some good back into the world. It was the church that turned its back on him. I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to reveal any spoilers. But, the release of the church, combined with working at the Roman Agency, still allows him to do what he always wanted to do, fight evil. He just does it now by selling properties. It’s the duality between belief and religious freedom, and the struggle one has with that concept that I enjoy playing with the most. Father Phil also doesn’t shy away from walking into a dark haunted basement or going head-to-head with a malevolent creature, which is also a blast to play.
What can viewers expect to see from Father Phil and the rest of the cast on this season?
None of our characters are surfaced. Each character has so many layers to them that you get to experience and uncover as the series goes on. For Father Phil, you’ll see definitely see him struggle with his own beliefs and his tie to the church. You’ll also see him using his brain and brawn to fight evil. And boy, does he get into some doozies.
One of your other projects is the horror film, “The Stairs”, which will hit theaters in August 2021. What is the film about and what kind of preparation did you have to do, to get yourself in the right mind space for this role?
So excited for “The Stairs” to hit theaters. It premieres August 12th and will reach about 700 theaters across the US for a massive one night only event! So, don’t wait to get your tickets!
The film is a frightening tale about a group of hikers hunted by a sinister presence in the woods. While this log line sounds like a typical horror-thriller, it’s anything but typical. Where we take the story, and the nuances of character development that is revealed as the film progresses, is beautiful and truthfully unexpected. There wasn’t anything particularly unusual about my preparation for this film versus any other role. But, I will say that this role was very physical and required a lot of mental and physical stamina. It was extremely intense, which isn’t a negative, it’s a complete positive as it made it easy to stay in the moment and in the given circumstances of the script.
In the film, you play the role of Nick. What can you tell us about him, how he relates to the other characters and what we can expect to see from him in this film?
Nick is a kind, lovable guy who means well and wants to belong but is usually ill prepared for the task at hand. He faces this head-on within the journey of the film and within his interactions with the other characters. Hopefully he’s the guy you can relate to, love, and root for.
If you weren’t working on your career as actor and entertainer, what other careers would you consider?
Astronaut! For sure! Don’t even need to consider it. I’m in!
When it comes to fashion, which designers and styes appeal most to your personality?
For me, I’m a jeans and t-shirt kind of a guy. But happy to throw on a Hugo Boss suit when required.
We look forward to seeing you on SYFY’s “SurrealEstate” and the film, “The Stairs”. What other projects do you have coming up in the near future?
I have some things in the mix but I can’t reveal it at this moment. Follow me on Twitter and Instagram for those kinds of details, as soon as I can talk about them.
